Does Dri-Dek float?
No. The specific gravity of Dri-Dek is greater than 1, meaning it is denser than water and will sink if placed in a pool, pond, lake, or any body of water. It is not suitable as a floating dock surface, floating raft, or floating pool cover. However, when laid on a solid surface (deck, concrete, boat floor), the self-draining design handles water flow excellently.
Is Dri-Dek slippery when wet?
No. Dri-Dek provides anti-slip footing even when wet. The textured raised-grid surface gives positive traction, and the flow-through design drains water away immediately so there's no standing water on top.
Is Dri-Dek comfortable to walk on?
Most people find Dri-Dek comfortable to walk on, including barefoot. People with sensitive feet may find the anti-slip surface texture a bit aggressive.
Does Dri-Dek off-gas, smell, or release VOCs?
No. Dri-Dek is safe to breathe around. There are no harmful smells and no off-gassing. You may notice a faint vinyl scent on a brand-new tile, similar to a vinyl shower curtain, but it is harmless and dissipates quickly. The Oxy-B1 vinyl also includes anti-microbial additives.
Is Dri-Dek latex-free?
Yes. Dri-Dek is made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) vinyl, which is chemically a different material than natural latex rubber. People with latex allergies are not affected by Dri-Dek.
Is Dri-Dek ADA compliant?
With the 2"x12" Beveled Edge installed along the perimeter, Dri-Dek conforms to the sloped-access specification under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Note: the US government does not issue formal ADA certifications for any product, so technically no product is 'ADA certified' — but Dri-Dek with the Edge meets the sloped-access spec.
Is Dri-Dek wheelchair-accessible?
Yes. The 2"x12" Beveled Edge piece creates a smooth ramp from floor level up onto the Dri-Dek surface, allowing wheelchairs, dollies, and rolling carts to roll on without catching. Install the Edge along any side where a wheelchair or cart will cross.
Does Dri-Dek dampen sound?
Yes, somewhat. Dri-Dek provides sound and impact dampening — particularly noticeable on boats when weights, tackle, tools, or other heavy objects are dropped. The cushioned vinyl absorbs the impact and reduces noise. We don't publish a specific dB or NRC rating.
How long does Dri-Dek last?
Dri-Dek lasts a long time. With proper maintenance, customers regularly get 20 or more years of service out of it. We've heard from customers replacing their tiles after two decades who say the original product is still working well — they just want a refresh.
Is Dri-Dek recyclable?
Yes. Dri-Dek's Oxy-B1 vinyl is recyclable, and tiles can be disposed of through standard means at end of life.
