Stopping the Mildew Smell in Cabin and Cockpit Lockers

Open a cockpit locker or lazarette on a boat that has been sitting for a few weeks and you usually know immediately. The mildew smell hits before you see anything. There may not be visible mold at all, just that closed, damp, biological odor that no amount of bleach removes permanently.

What actually solves it: elevation and airflow

The structural fix is to lift gear off the compartment floor so water can pass beneath it, and to let air circulate under what is stored. When gear is no longer in contact with standing water, it dries between uses. When air can move beneath stored items, the compartment dries. When the surface the gear rests on has antimicrobial properties, mildew growth on that liner surface is actively resisted.
